Chapter 8 - The Secret in the Drawer

My mother closed the front door, locking both deadbolts with a heavy turn of her wrist. She walked back into the kitchen, picked up her tea mug, and took a slow sip.
"Sit down, Maya," she said gently.
I sat at the wooden table, my mind spinning with a thousand questions.
"That flip phone," I started, pointing toward the sideboard. "A federal agency wiped out a hundred-million-dollar corporation in sixty seconds because you pressed a button. Who was on the other side of that line?"
Mom set her cup down. She reached into her apron pocket and placed the black phone on the table between us.
"Your father wasn't a salesman, Maya," she began softly. "His name wasn't even Thomas Sterling."
I blinked, stunned. "What?"
"His real name was Victor Vance," Mom said. "He was the founder and primary shareholder of Vance Global Syndicate—the parent entity that funded Declan's startup ten years ago."
My jaw dropped. "Declan's company... was funded by my father?"
"When your father died twenty years ago," Mom explained, "he left behind a master trust. He knew the corporate world was full of wolves. So he created a covert oversight board—The Apex Council. They monitor everyone who uses the Vance family capital."
Mom looked straight into my eyes.
"Declan didn't build that empire on his own, Maya," she revealed. "He was granted access to the Vance trust assets only because he married you. The moment he laid a hand on you, he violated the primary clause of the trust."
"Clause?" I asked.
"The Protection Clause," Mom answered quietly. "If the heir is abused or endangered by their spouse, the entire capital structure is liquidated immediately, and the offender is stripped of every asset."
I stared at the black phone resting on the worn tablecloth.

"So... I'm not just a builder's wife," I whispered.
"No, my sweet girl," my mother smiled softly, touching my hand. "You are the sole owner of Vance Global."
