Chapter 16 - The Fall of Declan Vance

|
The formal sentencing hearing took place on a rainy Friday morning.
The courtroom was packed with journalists, Wall Street executives, and curious onlookers. I sat in the front row alongside my mother and Natalie Brooks, wearing a dark green tailored dress that highlighted my tall, unyielding posture.
Declan stood before the judge’s bench in his orange jumpsuit, his head bowed.
Judge Harrison, a stern woman with sharp grey eyes, adjusted her glasses as she reviewed the final plea agreement.
"Mr. Vance," Judge Harrison spoke, her voice ringing clearly through the silent courtroom. "Your actions demonstrate a appalling pattern of greed, financial deceit, and brutal domestic violence against the very woman who helped build your career."
Declan remained silent, staring at the floorboards.
"Under the terms of the federal plea agreement," the judge continued, "you are hereby sentenced to ten years in federal custody, followed by five years of supervised release. All personal assets, including your luxury vehicles, real estate, and offshore accounts, are permanently forfeited to the victim restitution fund."
Gavel slam.
The sharp sound echoed like a gunshot.
Federal guards immediately grabbed Declan's arms, turning him around to lead him toward the side holding cell. As he passed my row, he paused for a brief second, his eyes meeting mine.
There was no anger left in his face. No arrogance. Only an empty, hollow abyss of regret.
I didn't smile. I didn't sneer. I simply watched him walk away into the shadows of the prison corridor, closing the dark chapter of my past forever.

My mother patted my knee gently. "It's over, my dear."
"No, Mom," I answered, standing up tall as the room erupted into chatter. "The nightmare is over. My life is just starting."
