Chapter 17 - Reclaiming the Crown

Three months later.
The grand ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton gushed with crystal chandeliers, classical violin music, and the elite figures of high society. It was the annual Vance Global Charity Gala.
I stood on the elevated stage wearing a dazzling sapphire silk gown. Beside me was a massive illuminated display showing the new company initiative: The Maya Vance Emergency Housing & Independence Fund.
I took the microphone, looking out over the crowd of a thousand executives, politicians, and media reporters.
"Five months ago," I began, my voice clear and powerful, "I ran barefoot through the cold rain to escape a life of violence and manipulation. I was told I was nothing without the man who held the keys to my home."
The room fell into an absolute, respectful hush.
"Today," I continued, "the Maya Vance Foundation has funded twelve new secure housing facilities and provided legal aid to over two thousand women across the country. We have restructured Vance Global into a debt-free, sustainable green construction leader valued at over two hundred million dollars."
The crowd erupted into thunderous, standing applause.
As I stepped down from the stage, my mother met me with a glowing smile, handing me a glass of champagne.
"Your father would be so proud of you, Maya," Mom whispered, her eyes shining with unshed tears.
"We did this together, Mom," I smiled, clinking my glass against hers.

As I took a sip, Natalie Brooks approached me with a subtle, urgent expression on her face.
"Director Vance," Natalie whispered. "There is someone waiting for you in the private VIP lounge upstairs. He claims he has an urgent message from Geneva."
