Chapter 9 - The Call to Marcus Hale

“Give me ten minutes,” Marcus replied calmly. “I’m at my home office right now. Let me pull up the digital security logs for your estate.”
I waited in the quiet courtyard, the distant sound of the wedding band playing a upbeat pop song echoing through the glass doors. Five minutes later, my phone chimed with an incoming encrypted email from Marcus.
I opened the file. It contained a series of high-resolution video frame grabs pulled directly from the internal security system of my home office in Raleigh.
The timestamp on the footage was from three nights ago, precisely at 8:45 PM—while Elena and I were out celebrating our wedding anniversary at a downtown restaurant.
The video clip clearly showed Daniel using his personal emergency access code to unlock the heavy mahogany door to my private study.
A second clip showed Vanessa entering right behind him, carrying a high-end digital SLR camera with a macro lens. While Daniel stood near the window watching the driveway, Vanessa systematically opened my locked filing cabinets, laying out confidential trust statements, deed titles, and property assessment files across my desk and photographing every single page.
Among the photographed documents were the preliminary sale contracts for Hawthorne Hall—the very venue where we were currently standing—and the master tax records for my primary corporate holding firm.
My chest tightened with a dark, bitter coldness.
This wasn't just a spoiled daughter-in-law making fun of an older woman’s pearls. This was a calculated, premeditated corporate raid executed by my own son.
Marcus’s voice came back through the speaker. “Robert, there’s more.”

“Tell me.”
“I just checked the audit logs for Daniel’s trust inquiries,” Marcus said grimly. “Two weeks ago, Daniel submitted a formal legal request to my assistant asking whether the trust’s hardship acceleration clause could be triggered early if both primary granters—you and Elena—were rendered incapacitated or deceased.”
