Chapter 17 - Bank Fraud Exposed

|

I took my wife’s trembling hand, lifted her gently from her chair, and guided her toward the main exits of Hawthorne Hall.

Behind us, the ballroom was in utter chaos. Catering staff stood frozen against the walls, guests were frantically whispering and checking their phones, and Vanessa was screaming at Daniel in the middle of the dance floor, demanding her ring back so she could pawn it.

Marcus Hale followed us out into the cool night air, handing me a quiet file update as we walked toward my car.

“The lender Daniel emailed this afternoon has already been notified of the fraud,” Marcus said as he opened the passenger door for Elena. “They canceled his credit line ten minutes ago. His business partners have called an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning to remove him as managing director.”

“Good,” I said simply.

Elena sat quietly in the front seat, looking out the window as the grand lights of Hawthorne Hall receded in the rearview mirror. She didn't cry. She didn't yell. She just stared at her simple silver bracelet, tracing the metal with her thumb.

“Elena?” I asked softly, taking my eyes off the road for a second to check on her. “Are you alright?”

She took a long, deep breath, turning her head to look at me. The sadness in her eyes was profound, but beneath it lay a quiet, sudden sense of peace.

“For twenty-nine years, Robert,” Elena murmured softly, “I thought if I gave him enough love, he would grow into a good man. I thought his cruelty was my fault.”

She reached over, placing her soft hand over mine on the steering wheel.

“Thank you for waking me up,” she whispered.

That was the moment I knew the deepest wound had finally begun to heal.
