Chapter 6 - The Confrontation in the Hallway

|
The ballroom erupted into chaotic whispers as Vanessa’s chief bridesmaid frantically threw a heavy wool coat over Vanessa’s exposed backside. Crying tears of pure rage, Vanessa was unceremoniously lifted—chair cushion and all—by two venue attendants and rushed upstairs to the bridal suite to attempt a wardrobe emergency.
Daniel followed ten minutes later, his face pale and contorted with anger.
He didn't check on his mother. He marched straight down the side aisle toward our table, stopping right behind my chair.
“Outside. Now,” Daniel growled under his breath.
I calmly set my napkin down on the table, patted Elena’s hand to reassure her, and followed my son into the quiet service corridor near the restrooms.
The moment the heavy door shut behind us, Daniel turned on me, his eyes wild with fury.
“You switched the chairs!” he barked, coming within inches of my face. “You humiliating my wife in front of two hundred people!”
I took a slow, steady breath, looking down at the young man I had raised.
“Did I?” I asked mildly.
“Don't play dumb with me, Dad!” Daniel spat, pointing a trembling finger at my chest. “I saw you near the door earlier! You switched her chair with Mom’s! Vanessa’s dress is ruined!”
“Interesting choice of words,” I replied, my voice dropping into a cold, dangerous register. “So you admit that the chair was meant for your mother?”
Daniel stiffened. He opened his mouth to speak, but the words caught in his throat.
“You stood there, Daniel,” I continued, stepping closer until he was forced to look up at me. “You guarded the door while that girl poured industrial adhesive on a chair meant for the woman who mortgaged her own home to keep you out of bankruptcy. And you told me not to ruin the joke.”
“It was just a harmless prank!” Daniel stammered, trying to regain his footing. “It wasn't supposed to end up like this! You’re going to go up to that suite right now and apologize to Vanessa.”

I looked at him with an absolute lack of emotion.
“No.”
