Chapter 8 - The Confidential Lease

Vanessa wasn't finished. Holding the microphone high, she flashed a dazzling, predatory smile at her college friends gathered near the front stage.
“And that’s not all,” Vanessa announced triumphantly. “Daniel’s logistics firm will be expanding exponentially next month, taking over the entire corporate penthouse of the Westbridge building downtown!”
The crowd broke into enthusiastic applause. Daniel forced a stiff, unnatural smile, waving weakly to the room.
My heart went completely still.
The lease negotiations for the Westbridge building were strictly confidential. The property was owned by one of my primary holding companies, and the availability of the penthouse space had only been discussed in private meetings between three people: myself, my head acquisitions officer, and my personal attorney.
Daniel was not on that distribution list.
There was only one way Daniel and Vanessa could possibly know that the Westbridge penthouse was coming available, or that I owned the master deed to the Ridgemont estate.
They had been going through my private files.
I leaned over to Elena, whispering softly into her ear. “I need to make a quick phone call. Stay right here, sweetheart.”
I stood up, walked swiftly past the cheering guests, and exited into the quiet outdoor courtyard. The cool night air hit my face, sharpening my focus.
I pulled out my phone and dialed Marcus Hale, my senior legal counsel and closest confidant for over twenty years.
Marcus answered on the second ring. “Robert? How’s the reception going?”
“Marcus,” I said, my voice as hard as flint. “I need you to execute an immediate freeze on every pending transaction involving Daniel.”
Silence hung on the line for a long moment.
“Specify, Robert,” Marcus said, his professional tone kicking in instantly.
“Freeze the draft deed transfer for the Ridgemont house. Freeze the quarterly distribution from his secondary trust fund. And terminate all preliminary lease discussions for the Westbridge building immediately.”

Marcus took a quiet breath. “May I ask what happened?”
“My son didn't just disrespect his mother tonight, Marcus,” I said, looking up at the clear night sky. “He’s been stealing from my study.”
