Chapter 2 - Twenty-Nine Years of Sacrifice

|

Standing alone in that empty corridor, my mind retreated to the quiet, humble living room where my wife, Elena, had spent twenty-nine years building our son’s world piece by piece.

When Daniel struggled in middle school, Elena spent three hours every night sitting beside him at the kitchen table, refusing to go to sleep until he understood his lessons. When he failed algebra, she took a weekend job at a local bakery just to pay for private tutors.

When his first tech startup went under six years ago, leaving him drowning in a quarter-million dollars of debt, Elena didn't hesitate.

“We have to help him, Robert,” she had begged me, tears filling her tired eyes. “He’s our son. If we don't believe in him, who will?”

She willingly signed the papers to mortgage our beloved lake house—the one property she cherished above all else—so Daniel could clear his name and start fresh. She wore ten-year-old coats, skipped trips to the salon, and mended her own shoes without a single word of complaint.

Yet, from the moment Vanessa entered his life two years ago, Daniel began to treat his mother like an embarrassing relic of a past he wished he could erase.

Vanessa called Elena “country” behind her back. She mocked her subtle Eastern European accent whenever Elena mispronounced a word at dinner. Just three weeks ago, at the rehearsal dinner, Vanessa had leaned over to her chief bridesmaid and whispered loud enough for the entire table to hear:

“Daniel’s mother actually thinks pearls make her look classy. Bless her heart.”

Elena had swallowed hard, clutching her napkin under the table, pretending she hadn't heard.

And Daniel? Daniel had just smiled into his wine glass, chuckling softly at his fiancée’s spiteful wit. That silence hurt Elena far more than any insult Vanessa could ever throw.
