Chapter 14 - Unmasking the Prank

|

The room descended into utter chaos. Guests turned to stare at Vanessa with expressions of absolute disgust. Several older family friends shook their heads in disbelief, while Vanessa’s own bridesmaids looked away, mortified to be associated with her.

Vanessa’s face went white, then instantly flushed with defensive rage. She snatched a second microphone from the DJ’s booth and screamed into it:

“He’s lying! He’s a crazy old man who’s jealous of his son’s success! Nobody was going to get hurt! It was just a joke!”

“A joke?” I repeated, my voice dropping an octave, echoing powerfully through the speakers. “You think publicly humiliating a woman who sacrificed thirty years of her life to raise the man you’re marrying is a joke?”

Daniel stepped forward, trying desperately to salvage his dignity. “Dad, stop it! You’re making a huge scene! Turn off the mic!”

“I’m just getting started, Daniel,” I said coldly.

I gestured toward the back of the room. Marcus Hale stepped forward, holding his tablet high. He tapped the screen, wirelessly casting its display directly onto the two massive projection screens hanging on either side of the stage—screens typically used for showing childhood photo slide shows.

The bright ambient lights of the ballroom dimmed automatically as the screens flickered to life.

A high-definition security video began to play.

There, magnified twenty feet tall for every single guest to see, was the crystal-clear footage of Daniel unlocking my home office study three nights ago. The room watched in absolute, stunned silence as Vanessa pulled out her professional camera, systematically photographing my private financial ledgers, deed titles, and trust documents while Daniel kept watch at the window.

The room erupted into a deafening roar of shocked murmurs.

Vanessa dropped her microphone. It hit the hardwood floor with a deafening screech of feedback that rattled the crystal chandeliers.
