Chapter 9 - The New Reign

Two weeks later, the snow began to fall over Chicago, covering the burned ruins of the Moretti warehouses in a thick layer of pristine white.
The city had changed completely. Mateo Moretti had been captured by the Commission and exiled permanently from the state, his territory swallowed entirely by the Marchetti syndicate. The Ashford family had liquidated their remaining assets and fled to Europe in utter disgrace. Enzo Marchetti was no longer just the most feared man in Chicago—he was now the undisputed king of the entire Midwest underworld.
Inside the Marchetti estate, the grand hall had been fully restored. The bloodstains were gone, the marble floors polished to a mirror shine, and the velvet drapes replaced with rich, warm gold.
A massive winter gala was underway. Every political figure, business leader, and syndicate boss in the region had gathered to pay homage to Don Enzo Marchetti.
At the top of the grand marble staircase, Enzo stood looking down at the crowd. He was dressed in a flawless black tuxedo, his dark hair neatly styled, the cut on his jaw now reduced to a faint, aristocratic scar.
Beside him stood Adeline.
She wore a breathtaking gown of midnight-blue silk, dusted with subtle silver embroidery that caught the light of the chandeliers. On her throat rested a stunning necklace of black diamonds—a gift from Enzo that signified her official status as his equal. She was no longer a servant, nor was she merely his assistant. She was the woman who stood beside the Don.
"They are all afraid of you," Adeline whispered, leaning slightly toward him with a quiet smile.
"Good," Enzo replied softly, his hand resting securely at the small of her back. "Fear keeps them obedient. But you... they respect you."
It was true. As Adeline looked down at the crowd, she saw the same senators and judges who had once watched her get beaten with a riding crop now bowing their heads politely whenever her gaze met theirs. They knew that to displease Adeline Croft was to invite the wrath of Enzo Marchetti.
"I spoke with Julian this morning," Adeline said, her eyes shining. "The doctors in Zurich say he will be able to walk again within six months."
Enzo smiled gently, a look reserved only for her. "I know. I spoke with his surgeon an hour before you did."
Adeline looked at him, her heart overflowing with warmth. "You think of everything, don't you?"
"Only when it comes to you," he answered smoothly.
Before they could descend the stairs, Luca approached them, stepping up respectfully with a silver tray. On the tray sat two crystal glasses of aged champagne.
Adeline looked at the sparkling liquid, a brief memory of that terrible night eleven days ago flashing through her mind.
Enzo picked up both glasses. He handed one to Adeline, then raised his own.
"To new beginnings," Enzo said softly.
Adeline took the glass, her eyes locked onto his. "To survival."

They clinked their glasses together, the clear sound echoing over the music of the orchestra below. Adeline took a slow sip, feeling the cold, effervescent wine warm her chest.
Down in the hall below, the guests raised their glasses in unison toward the staircase, offering a silent toast to the ruler of Chicago and the extraordinary woman who had captured his heart.
