Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Grass

The days that followed were a blur of high-stakes tension. As predicted, the collapse of the Marchetti-Ashford alliance created a power vacuum in Chicago. The Moretti family, led by the ruthless and elderly Don Mateo Moretti, seized the opportunity, raiding Ashford warehouses and trying to choke off Enzo's supply lines along the river.
Yet inside the Marchetti estate, Adeline found herself pulled deeper into Enzo's world. She was not just a spectator; Enzo demanded her presence in every high-level meeting. He quickly realized that Adeline possessed a sharp, razor-thin intellect and an extraordinary memory for detail.
"Look at these ledger entries," Enzo said late one night, sliding a stack of financial documents across his desk to her. "The Morettis are undercutting our whiskey distribution prices by thirty percent in the South Side. Where are they getting the capital?"
Adeline scanned the rows of numbers, her index finger trailing down the page. "They aren't getting outside capital, sir."
Enzo raised an eyebrow. "Explain."
"Look at the shipping manifests from the old Ashford docks three months ago," she pointed out, laying two pages side by side. "The volume of imported industrial chemicals increased by four hundred percent, but the tax filings show a loss. They weren't importing chemicals. They were smuggling raw pharmaceutical materials. The Morettis didn't need the Ashford merger—they were already using Arthur Ashford’s lines behind his back."
Enzo stared at the documents, then raised his eyes to meet hers. A rare, genuine smile touched his lips.
"You see through the fog better than my top lieutenants, Adeline," he said, his voice laced with genuine respect.
"I grew up in the South Side, Mr. Marchetti," she said softly, looking down. "When you spend your whole life watching criminals trick your neighbors, you learn how the tricks are played."
Enzo stood up, walked around the desk, and leaned against the edge near her chair. "Drop the 'Mr. Marchetti.' When we are alone, I am Enzo."
Adeline looked up, meeting his intense gaze. "It wouldn't be appropriate, sir."
"I decide what is appropriate in this house," he said gently. He reached out, his thumb lightly stroking her cheekbone. The touch was so tender, so wildly out of character for the ruthless mafia Don who had threatened to drown his enemies days prior, that Adeline forgot how to breathe.
"You haven't asked about your brother," Enzo said softly.
Adeline froze. Her heart skipped a beat. "My... my brother?"
"Julian Croft," Enzo said, his voice calm. "Twenty-two years old. Currently residing in Saint Jude’s Sanatorium, recovering from a rare spinal infection. His bills were astronomical—which is why you took a maid’s job here, wasn't it?"
Adeline felt cold panic rise in her chest. "How did you—"
"I know everything about the people under my roof," Enzo said. "Yesterday morning, I had my attorneys clear his entire account. His medical debts are paid in full. I also transferred him to a private facility in Switzerland under the care of the top specialists in Europe."
Tears sprang to Adeline’s eyes before she could stop them. "Why would you do that?"
"Because you took three lashes across your back to protect my household from a poisoner," Enzo said, his voice dropping to a low, fierce murmur. "Because you are loyal, Adeline. In a world full of snakes and traitors, loyalty is priceless."
Adeline swallowed hard, overwhelmed by the gesture. For years she had carried the crushing weight of her brother’s survival on her shoulders alone. In one move, Enzo had lifted it entirely.
"Thank you," she choked out, her voice trembling. "Enzo... thank you."
He leaned closer, his face inches from hers. "You don't owe me thanks, Adeline. You owe me your trust."
Before she could answer, the door to the study burst open again. Luca hurried into the room, his face pale and sweating.
"Boss! We have a severe problem," Luca panted. "Don Mateo Moretti has just called an emergency meeting of the Commission. Every family head in the city is attending at the Grand Drake Hotel tonight."
Enzo straightened up, his face hardening instantly back into stone. "On what grounds?"
"He claims you broke the peace by attacking Arthur Ashford without cause," Luca said grimly. "And... he claims you are harboring a female spy who helped orchestrate the poisoning of Camilla Ashford to frame his family."
May you like
Enzo glanced at Adeline, his eyes burning with cold rage. "Mateo wants to turn the whole city against me."
"He demanded you bring the girl to the tribunal tonight," Luca added nervously. "If you don't show up with her, the Commission declares war on the Marchetti family."
