Chapter 19 - The Firelight Proposal

Enzo wrapped his strong arms around her waist, pulling her close against his chest. He looked down into her deep brown eyes, his expression vulnerable in a way no other human being on earth had ever been allowed to see.

"I want you by my side," Enzo whispered, his voice thick with raw emotion. "Not as an assistant. Not as a guest. I want you as my wife. The Queen of Chicago."

Adeline’s breath hitched in her throat. She looked at this powerful, dangerous, yet intensely devoted man who had stripped off his own coat to shield her when she was bleeding on his floor. He had ruined his own marriage, declared war on his enemies, and risked his entire empire to protect her dignity and her life.

"Is that a command, Don Marchetti?" she asked, a small, playful smile playing on her lips.

"It is a plea," Enzo corrected softly, his dark eyes shining with sincerity. "From a man who loves you."

Adeline’s smile softened into pure tenderness. She leaned up on her tiptoes, wrapping her arms around his neck.

"Yes," she whispered against his lips. "Yes, Enzo. I will."

Enzo kissed her deeply, pulling her into a passionate embrace as the firelight danced around them.

The girl who had once scrubbed marble floors in the dark, trembling under the whip of an heiress, had found her place at last. She had not only survived the vicious underworld of Chicago—she had conquered the heart of its most dangerous king.
