Chapter 17 - Ashes of the Past

|

The war was over in less than forty-eight hours.

With Rossi dead and the other families severely crippled by the infighting, Enzo Marchetti called a final, mandatory sit-down in the basement of his downtown casino.

The surviving bosses—Romano, Falcone, and the remnants of the Irish mob—sat around the circular poker table. They looked exhausted, bloodied, and terrified.

Enzo sat at the head of the table. But he did not sit alone.

Adeline sat to his immediate right. She was no longer wearing a maid’s uniform or an oversized sweater. She wore a stunning, tailored crimson suit that commanded absolute authority. Her posture was flawless, her expression unreadable.

"The old Commission is dead," Enzo announced, dropping Rossi’s bloody ring onto the center of the wooden table. It clattered loudly.

Romano swallowed hard. "Who takes the head seat, Marchetti?"

"There is no head seat. There is only me," Enzo stated, his voice leaving no room for debate. "From this day forward, I take sixty percent of all city operations. The remaining forty is divided among you. If you break the peace, if you step out of line, I will not send negotiators. I will send body bags."

No one argued. The fear in the room was palpable.

"And one more thing," Enzo said, his dark eyes sweeping over the powerful men. He reached over and took Adeline’s hand, lacing his fingers through hers on top of the table for all to see.

"This is Adeline. She is my right hand, my strategist, and my equal. You will speak to her with the exact same respect you speak to me. If anyone disrespects her, if anyone even looks at her with a shadow of a doubt..." Enzo leaned forward. "I will burn your entire bloodline to ash. Do we have an understanding?"

Every single boss at the table bowed their heads in submission.

"Yes, Don Marchetti."

The underworld had a new king. And he had crowned his queen.
