Chapter 10 - The Queen of Chicago

Later that night, long after the last guests had departed and the heavy oak doors of the estate were locked against the winter storm outside, Enzo and Adeline stood in the quiet warmth of the third-floor study.

A bright fire crackled in the hearth, casting a soft, golden glow across the room. Outside, the snow blew gently against the high glass windows, shutting out the rest of the cold, violent world.

Enzo stood near the fireplace, his bowtie undone, his top collar unbuttoned. He held a glass of bourbon in his hand, watching Adeline as she walked slowly around his massive oak desk, her fingers tracing the smooth mahogany edge.

"You look like you belong behind that desk," Enzo remarked softly, a fond trace of humor in his voice.

Adeline stopped, looking up at him with a thoughtful expression. "Perhaps I do. Someone has to keep your ledgers balanced and make sure you don't shoot every businessman who annoys you."

Enzo chuckled, setting his glass down on the mantelpiece. He walked slowly across the room toward her, his movements graceful and deliberate.

"You saved my life, Adeline," he said, stopping directly in front of her. "Not just from the poison, and not just from the Commission. You saved me from becoming the monster everyone thought I was."

Adeline reached up, her hand gently resting against his cheek, her fingers brushing over the quiet scar on his jaw. "You were never a monster, Enzo. You were just a man surrounded by monsters."

Enzo wrapped his strong arms around her waist, pulling her close against his chest. He looked down into her deep brown eyes, his expression vulnerable in a way no other human being on earth had ever been allowed to see.

"I want you by my side," Enzo whispered, his voice thick with raw emotion. "Not as an assistant. Not as a guest. I want you as my wife. The Queen of Chicago."

Adeline’s breath hitched in her throat. She looked at this powerful, dangerous, yet intensely devoted man who had stripped off his own coat to shield her when she was bleeding on his floor. He had ruined his own marriage, declared war on his enemies, and risked his entire empire to protect her dignity and her life.

"Is that a command, Don Marchetti?" she asked, a small, playful smile playing on her lips.

"It is a plea," Enzo corrected softly, his dark eyes shining with sincerity. "From a man who loves you."

Adeline’s smile softened into pure tenderness. She leaned up on her tiptoes, wrapping her arms around his neck.

"Yes," she whispered against his lips. "Yes, Enzo. I will."

Enzo kissed her deeply, pulling her into a passionate embrace as the firelight danced around them.

The girl who had once scrubbed marble floors in the dark, trembling under the whip of an heiress, had found her place at last. She had not only survived the vicious underworld of Chicago—she had conquered the heart of its most dangerous king.

Together, standing at the window looking out over the snow-covered city, they ruled supreme, bound by a loyalty stronger than blood and a love born from the ashes of war.
