Chapter 16 - The Fall of the Old Kings

Isabella screamed as the silver revolver was violently blasted from her hand. The bullet had taken off two of her fingers. She collapsed onto the Persian rug, clutching her bleeding hand, sobbing in agony.
Enzo stepped out of the elevator. His suit was dusted with snow and gunpowder. The barrel of his matte-black 1911 pistol was still smoking. He looked at Isabella writhing on the floor with absolute, chilling apathy.
He didn't say a word to her. He walked straight past the weeping heiress and went directly to Adeline, holstering his weapon.
"Are you hurt?" he demanded, his hands frantically checking her shoulders, his dark eyes scanning her face for any sign of fear.
"I'm fine, Enzo," Adeline said softly, placing her hands on his chest to calm him. "I knew you wouldn't let her touch me."
Enzo let out a ragged breath, pulling her flush against his body. He kissed the top of her head, closing his eyes as if her presence was the only thing keeping him tethered to humanity.
"Enzo! Please!" Isabella begged from the floor, her arrogance completely shattered. "Have mercy! My father is dead. The Commission is gone. Please don't kill me!"
Enzo turned slowly, keeping one arm firmly wrapped around Adeline’s waist.
"Mercy?" Enzo repeated, the word tasting like ash in his mouth. "Did you show mercy when you whipped her? Did you show mercy when you tried to poison me and let her take the fall?"
"I was desperate!"
"You were cruel," Enzo corrected coldly. "I am not going to kill you, Isabella. Death is too quick."
He looked at his guards who had just rushed into the room.

"Strip her of her family name. Freeze every offshore account she has. Throw her out onto the streets of the South Side with nothing but the clothes on her back. Let her see how long she survives in the world she forced Adeline to live in."
Isabella shrieked and kicked as the guards dragged her out by her hair, her cries echoing down the long marble hallway until the heavy doors slammed shut.
