Chapter 7 - The Blueprint

The morning after the wedding, Clara sat at the breakfast table in Daniel’s sunlit kitchen.
He placed a plate of scrambled eggs in front of her.
“You look entirely too thoughtful for someone on their honeymoon,” Daniel said, sitting opposite her.
“We postponed the honeymoon until next month so you could finish the Boston project,” Clara reminded him, pouring coffee.
“True. But you still look like you’re drafting a five-year plan.”
She smiled.
“I was thinking about the Vance Foundation.”
Daniel groaned playfully.
“We’ve been married for twelve hours. Can we pause corporate strategy?”
“Margaret called me yesterday.”
Daniel stopped eating.
“Is she okay?”
“She is. But she wants to step down as director.”
“Why?”
“She says she’s seventy-two and wants to spend more time in Italy.”
Daniel nodded.
“That’s fair. Who does she want to replace her?”
Clara took a sip of coffee.
“She wants me to oversee the transition.”
“You’re already chairwoman of the entire company, Clara.”
“I know.”
“You can’t run both.”
“I don’t intend to.”
She looked at him.
“I want to restructure the Foundation completely.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“How?”
“Right now, it functions as a traditional charity. We write checks. We sponsor events. We put our name on hospital wings.”
“And?”
“And it feels passive.”
Clara traced the rim of her mug.
“When I was rebuilding my life after Julian, what I needed wasn't just a check. I needed legal advocates. I needed financial literacy training. I needed physical security.”
Daniel understood.
“You want the Foundation to become an active resource.”
“Yes.”
“An organization that provides the scaffolding for people to rebuild.”
Clara smiled.
“Exactly. A blueprint for recovery.”
