Chapter 14 - The New Foundation

|
Six months later, the Vance Foundation’s new headquarters officially opened.
The building was everything Daniel had promised.
It was secure, entirely anonymous from the street, and filled with natural light.
Sarah Lin was exhausted but radiant as she gave Clara a private tour.
“We have four full-time family law attorneys on staff now,” Sarah explained, walking down a bright corridor. “And a dedicated financial forensics team to track hidden assets.”
Clara looked into one of the consultation rooms.
It was designed like a comfortable living room, not a sterile office.
“It’s perfect, Sarah.”
“We couldn't have done it without the endowment,” Sarah said seriously. “The patent licensing revenue guarantees our funding for the next twenty years.”
Clara smiled.
“I consider it an excellent return on investment.”
They walked into the main intake area.
A young woman was sitting on a sofa, clutching a toddler to her chest. She looked terrified, her eyes darting toward the door.
Clara recognized that fear immediately.
It was the fear of waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Sarah approached the woman gently.
“Hi. I’m Sarah. We are going to help you.”
The woman looked up, tears spilling over her cheeks.
“He said if I left, he would take my son.”
“He won't,” Sarah said firmly. “We have lawyers drafting the emergency custody orders right now.”
Clara watched the interaction from a distance.
She didn't intervene.
She didn't need to.
She had built the machine; now she was letting it work.
She walked out of the building and into the bright afternoon sun.
Daniel was waiting for her by the car.
“How was the tour?” he asked, kissing her cheek.
“It’s functioning,” Clara said, a profound sense of peace settling over her.

“You did good, Clara.”
“We did good,” she corrected, taking his hand.
