Chapter 19 - The Anniversary Gala

|
The ten-year anniversary of the Vance Foundation’s restructuring was celebrated with a massive gala at the very same ballroom where Clara had once fallen.
The room was transformed.
It wasn't a sterile corporate event.
It was a vibrant, joyful celebration of survival and advocacy.
The walls were lined with anonymized testimonies from women who had escaped abusive situations thanks to the clinic’s rapid-response legal teams.
Clara stood near the back of the room with Daniel, watching the crowd.
Margaret was holding court near the bar, regaling a group of young lawyers with stories of her travels in Italy.
Sarah Lin, now a prominent national figure in domestic abuse advocacy, was delivering a passionate speech on the main stage.
“We are not just changing lives,” Sarah told the audience. “We are changing the laws that allowed those lives to be broken in the first place.”
The crowd erupted in applause.
Clara felt a tap on her shoulder.
She turned to see a young woman standing there, looking nervous but determined.
“Ms. Vance?” the woman asked.
“Yes?”
“My name is Maya. I... I was one of the first clients at the clinic. Ten years ago.”
Clara’s breath caught in her throat.
“I remember you, Maya,” Clara said softly.
“I just wanted to thank you,” Maya said, tears shining in her eyes. “My son is starting high school next year. We are safe. And I went back to school. I’m a paralegal now. I work for Sarah.”
Clara felt a profound, overwhelming sense of completion.
“You did the hard work, Maya,” Clara said, squeezing the woman’s hand. “We just opened the door.”
Maya smiled through her tears and walked back to her table.
Daniel wrapped his arm around Clara’s waist.

“You built something incredible here, Clara.”
“We built it,” Clara corrected.
