Chapter 16 - The Empty Chair

The first board meeting after Arthur’s death felt strange.
His heavy leather chair at the end of the table sat empty.
Clara sat in her usual place as Chairwoman, but the absence of his presence was palpable.
The board members were unusually quiet, waiting for her to speak.
“Before we begin the operational review,” Clara announced, “I want to propose a permanent change to our governance structure.”
The executives leaned forward.
“In honor of my father’s legacy, I am proposing the creation of an independent employee oversight committee.”
A senior director frowned.
“An oversight committee? With what authority?”
“The authority to review all executive compensation, safety protocols, and internal HR grievances,” Clara explained. “And they will report directly to the board, bypassing the executive suite entirely.”
“Ms. Vance, that is highly irregular,” another director argued. “It undermines our authority.”
“It ensures accountability,” Clara countered sharply. “A company only thrives when the people building it feel safe enough to speak the truth without fear of retaliation.”
She looked around the table.
“My father spent his final years recognizing that power without accountability is just tyranny. We are implementing this committee.”
She didn't ask for a vote.
She mandated it.
The directors exchanged nervous glances, but no one argued further.
They had learned that Clara Vance did not make empty threats.
As the meeting concluded, Maya handed Clara a note.
“A personal message, Ms. Vance. From Margaret.”

“He would have fought you on that committee. And then he would have secretly been incredibly proud of you for forcing it through.”
Clara smiled, folding the note and placing it in her pocket.
