Chapter 20 - The Unbroken Circle

|

Later that evening, after the speeches concluded and the music began, Clara found herself standing in the exact center of the ballroom floor.

The very spot where Julian had shoved her.

She closed her eyes, remembering the humiliation, the pain, and the terrifying silence of the crowd.

She took a deep breath.

The memory didn't hurt anymore.

It was just a phantom, a ghost of a life that no longer existed.

She opened her eyes.

Daniel was walking toward her through the crowd, carrying two glasses of champagne.

He smiled when he saw her, his eyes crinkling at the corners.

He handed her a glass.

“What are we toasting to?” Daniel asked.

Clara looked around the room.

She saw Margaret laughing.

She saw Sarah Lin fiercely advocating for change.

She saw survivors celebrating their freedom.

She looked back at her husband, the man who had never asked her to be anything less than exactly who she was.

She raised her glass.

“To the blueprint,” Clara said clearly.

“The blueprint,” Daniel echoed, clinking his glass against hers.

They drank, the champagne crisp and cold.

The music swelled, filling the grand ballroom with light and sound.

Clara didn't look back at the spot on the floor.

She didn't need to.

She took Daniel’s hand and stepped onto the dance floor, moving gracefully into the vibrant, beautiful life she had built from the ruins.

She was Clara Vance.

May you like

She was unbroken.

And she was finally, entirely, free.
