Chapter 8: The Trap Snaps Shut

Six months after the birth of her son, Ava was sitting in the nursery when her phone vibrated. It was a direct line from her father.
"Ava," Arthur said, his voice unusually steady. "Turn on the news."
With a racing heart, she walked into the living room and switched on the television. The banner at the bottom of the screen flickered in bold, urgent lettering: INTERNATIONAL FUGITIVE NATHAN REYNOLDS APPREHENDED IN ZURICH.
The screen showed shaky, high-definition footage of Nathan being led out of a luxury hotel in handcuffs by Swiss federal authorities and Interpol agents.

He looked unrecognizable. The immaculate, tailored suits were gone, replaced by a disheveled jacket. His eyes, once full of arrogant calculation, were wide with panic and defeat.
He hadn't been caught because of the heartbreak he caused, or the emotional trauma he left behind. He was caught because his greed had left too many digital footprints. The international fraud, the tax evasion, and the embezzlement charges had finally caught up to him. As he was pushed into the back of a police transport vehicle, Ava let out a breath she felt she had been holding for an entire year.
