Chapter 18: The Heirloom

Autumn arrived, painting the backyard in brilliant strokes of amber and gold.

Ava was sitting on the back porch, watching the leaves fall, when Arthur walked out and sat beside her. He held a small, velvet jewelry box in his hands.

"Tomorrow is your mother's birthday," Arthur said quietly.

Ava nodded. Her mother had passed away when she was a teenager, leaving a quiet void that Arthur had spent his life trying to fill.

Arthur opened the box. Inside rested a breathtaking, vintage emerald ring surrounded by delicate diamonds.

"She wanted you to have this when you turned thirty," Arthur explained, his voice thick with emotion. "But when you married him... I couldn't bear the thought of that man demanding you sell it, or using it against you. So I kept it hidden."

He took the ring out and gently took Ava’s left hand. Her ring finger was completely bare, the pale indentation of her old wedding band long gone.

Arthur slid the emerald onto her right hand.

"A ring doesn't have to be a shackle, Ava," Arthur whispered. "It can just be a promise. A promise that you come from a lineage of strong, fierce women. And that you are entirely whole, all by yourself."

Ava looked at the deep green stone sparkling in the autumn light. She didn't need a partner to complete her. She didn't need a savior.

"Thank you, Dad," she breathed, resting her head on his shoulder.
