Chapter 19: The Foundation
A year and a half after her escape, Ava stood behind a podium in the grand ballroom of the city’s largest hotel.
The room was packed with hundreds of philanthropists, business leaders, and local politicians.
She wasn't there as a guest. She was the keynote speaker.
With Arthur’s backing, Ava had launched The Sanctuary Initiative, a non-profit foundation dedicated to providing immediate, untraceable legal and financial housing assistance for women and children escaping domestic violence.
The microphone picked up the steady, even rhythm of her breathing.
"For a very long time, I believed that silence was the price of survival," Ava spoke into the silent room. "I believed that if I made myself small enough, the shadows wouldn't notice me."
She looked out at the sea of faces.
"But power thrives in the dark. It relies on our isolation. It relies on the doors staying locked and the curtains staying drawn."
Ava gripped the edges of the podium.
"We are not defined by the cages that were built for us. We are defined by what we do when we finally break the lock. The Sanctuary Initiative is not just about providing a roof; it is about providing a fortress. It is about telling every person trapped in the dark that the sun is still shining outside, and we are holding the door open."
The room erupted.
It wasn't polite applause. It was a thunderous, standing ovation.
