Chapter 10: Reclaiming the Sun

One year later, the world had shrunk back down to what truly mattered.
The afternoon sun cast a warm, golden glow across the expansive backyard of Ava's new home. The grass was bright green, dotted with the colorful plastic toys of a toddler who was quickly learning to explore his world.
Ava stood on the porch, a cup of warm tea in her hands, watching her son chase a stream of iridescent bubbles across the lawn. His laughter was a pure, melodic sound that filled every empty corner of her heart. Nearby, Arthur Bennett sat in a wicker chair, pretending to read the financial papers but entirely focused on his grandson's antics.
Her son stumbled, his chubby legs losing coordination for a brief moment, before he pushed himself right back up with a determined grin. He ran straight toward Ava, his tiny hands reaching upward.
Ava set her tea down and lifted him into her arms, burying her face in his soft hair, breathing in the scent of baby lotion and pure sunshine. He wrapped his small fingers around her silver necklace, laughing up at her with eyes that held none of his father’s malice, only light.
Her father stepped up beside her, placing a warm, steady hand on her shoulder. "You made it, Ava," he murmured, looking at the two of them.

Ava looked at her son, then at the beautiful, peaceful home they had built from the ashes of a nightmare. The fear was gone. The shadows had vanished.
"Yes," Ava whispered, kissing her son's cheek as the sun began to dip below the horizon. "We did."
