Chapter 14: The Supermarket Aisle

The true test of healing often happens in public, in the most ordinary places.

Ava was in the produce section of the local grocery store, carefully selecting avocados, when she heard the sharp, polished voice.

"Ava? Is that you?"

Ava turned. Standing beside the organic apples was Beatrice, a prominent socialite from her old life. Beatrice had been one of the many "friends" who had turned a blind eye to the bruises, preferring the comfort of elite dinner parties over the uncomfortable reality of domestic abuse.

"Hello, Beatrice," Ava said, her voice polite but entirely detached.

Beatrice stepped closer, lowering her voice into a tone of practiced, theatrical pity.

"We were all just so shocked when you left," Beatrice murmured. "And the terrible things they are saying about him... I mean, he was always so charming. It must be so difficult for you, throwing away that entire life. If you ever need to talk, or need a way back in..."

The old Ava would have shrunk. She would have felt the crushing weight of societal judgment and nodded politely just to escape.

The new Ava looked Beatrice dead in the eye.

"I didn't throw away a life, Beatrice," Ava said clearly, not lowering her voice. "I escaped a prison. And the only thing difficult about it is realizing how many people held the keys and chose not to unlock the door."

Beatrice’s jaw dropped. The faux pity vanished, replaced by genuine shock.

"Have a lovely afternoon," Ava added.

She turned her shopping cart around and walked away. Her hands weren't shaking. Her heart rate was completely normal. She had finally learned that she didn't have to attend every argument she was invited to.
