Chapter 5 - The Red Lights Outside

|
The room was so quiet you could hear the crackle of the fireplace logs.
“Judge... Judge Whitaker?” Grant stammered, his voice dropping an octave as his arrogance shattered into pure terror. “Sir, this is a misunderstand—”
“I did not ask for an explanation, Mr. Holloway,” Samuel’s voice thundered through the tiny phone speaker, vibrating with an authority that had commanded federal courtrooms for thirty years. “I asked you to step away from her.”
Robert Lang immediately stepped forward, grabbing Grant by the shoulder and forcibly pulling him back away from where I lay on the floor.
“Give her the phone, Grant,” Robert ordered, his voice trembling with anger and embarrassment. “Do it now.”
“Samuel,” I whispered into the phone Dana held near my face. “My stomach hurts... I think something is wrong with the baby.”
“Help is already on the way, sweetheart,” Samuel said, his voice softening with immense tenderness. “The local precinct and an ambulance are two minutes out. Stay completely still.”
“You called the cops?” Grant gasped, backing away toward the front door. “On a private domestic argument?”
“An assault on a pregnant woman is not a domestic argument, Grant,” Samuel replied coldly. “It is a felony. And I suggest you do not move until the officers arrive.”
Within sixty seconds, red and blue lights flashed wildly through the front bay windows, casting eerie shadows across the luxury living room.
The front door opened, and Officer Maya Torres walked in alongside two paramedics carrying a stretcher. She took in the scene with a single glance: the shattered phone on the hearth, the weeping pregnant woman on the floor, the nervous lawyers standing against the walls, and Grant Holloway sweating through his designer shirt.
“Who is Natalie Holloway?” Officer Torres asked sternly.
“I am,” I whimpered from the floor.
Grant stepped forward, his hands raised in a pleading gesture.
“Officer, my wife experienced a severe dizzy spell due to her pregnancy hormones and fell. I was simply trying to—”
“Mr. Holloway,” Dana Brooks interrupted loudly, stepping directly in front of the officer. “He pushed her. I saw it. And Mark Jensen recorded the last five minutes on his phone.”
Grant spun around, staring at his coworker in utter betrayal.
“Dana, what the hell are you doing?!”

Officer Torres pulled out her handcuffs.
“Mr. Holloway, step away from your wife and put your hands behind your back.”
