Chapter 14 - The Cylinder Beneath the Stone

|

An hour later, a convoy of two vehicles navigated the winding, snow-packed roads leading deep into the Blackwood Pines nature reserve.

Samuel drove the lead SUV, while Officer Maya Torres and two armed plainclothes security officers followed directly behind us. I refused to let Samuel handle this alone; I demanded law enforcement presence for every step going forward.

The ancient family cemetery was hidden behind a grove of towering, snow-draped pine trees. Iron gates rusted with age stood half-open, creaking softly in the freezing winter wind.

We walked through the knee-deep snow until we reached a modest granite headstone standing apart from the others, surrounded by wild ivy.

Engraved upon the stone were two words: ANDREW ROWAN.

I dropped to my knees in the snow, my hand touching the cold granite surface.

“Dad...” I whimpered, the sorrow of a six-year-old girl surging back into my heart.

Footsteps crunched through the snow behind us.

Officer Torres immediately drew her sidearm. “Who’s there? Step into the open!”

A tall man stepped out from behind the stone chapel building. He wore a heavy canvas coat, his face weathered by harsh weather, his beard streaked with gray. But resting against his chest, catching the pale winter sunlight, was a polished silver nautical compass.

“Lower your weapon, Officer,” Samuel said quietly. “That is Caleb Mercer.”

My brother stood ten feet away, staring at me with tears streaming down his weathered cheeks.

“Birdie,” he whispered.

I stood up from the snow, wiping my face, unable to hold back the anger and love tearing my soul apart.

“You left me with strangers,” I cried out.

“I was twenty-one years old and hunted by armed men, Natalie!” Caleb answered, his voice cracking. “I was terrified! I thought I was protecting you!”

“Enough secrets!” I shouted, my voice echoing across the silent cemetery. “Both of you! Why are we here? What is under this stone?!”

Caleb walked past Officer Torres, dropping to his knees behind the headstone. He brushed away a thick layer of frozen leaves and dirt, revealing a flat steel plate secured into the stone foundation.

Using a metal crowbar from his coat, Caleb pried the plate upward.

Lying inside a hollowed-out chamber was a heavy, waterproof titanium cylinder.
