Chapter 18 - The First Breath

|

Six weeks later, during a peaceful, snowy Tuesday morning, my daughter entered the world.

The labor was smooth, surrounded not by stress or fear, but by the gentle support of proper medical care and the people who truly loved me.

She weighed seven pounds, two ounces, with a head full of dark hair and dark blue eyes that stared up at me with profound curiosity.

I held her against my chest, tears of immense joy spilling down my face as her tiny fingers wrapped tightly around my pinky.

“What is her name, Natalie?” the delivery nurse asked warmly.

I looked over at Samuel, who stood near the foot of the bed, wiping a tear from his eyes, and then at Caleb, who leaned against the wall with a proud, tearful smile.

“Her name is Amelia,” I announced clearly. “Amelia Grace Rowan.”

Not Holloway. Not Whitaker. Not Mercer.

She would carry my father’s real name, but more importantly, she would carry a clean slate—free from the web of corporate greed, dangerous secrets, and inherited lies that had plagued my family for twenty-five years.

Samuel stepped forward, his hands trembling slightly as I carefully placed the newborn into his arms.

The formidable retired federal judge—the man who had terrified mobsters and corporate titans—looked completely helpless as he held the tiny bundle against his chest.

“She’s so small, Natalie,” he whispered, his voice cracking with emotion.

“She’s strong, Uncle Samuel,” I smiled softly. “She comes from strong stock.”

Caleb walked over, gently touching Amelia’s tiny hand with his weathered finger.

“Welcome to the world, little bird,” Caleb whispered softly.

For the first time in my life, the air in the room felt light, clean, and completely mine.
