Chapter 20 - The Golden Key

|

On a crisp October evening, two weeks before Amelia’s first birthday, the tranquility of the lake house was broken by the arrival of an unmarked courier vehicle.

The driver delivered a heavy, wax-sealed wooden box addressed directly to Natalie Rowan.

There was no return address, no postage stamp, and no courier company logo on the receipt slip.

Samuel, Caleb, and I gathered around the kitchen island as Caleb used a small pocketknife to break the dark red wax seal stamped with an unfamiliar crest.

Inside the box lay three items:

First, a small, heavy golden key with intricate numerical engravings along its stem.

Second, an original, crisp black-and-white photograph taken in August 1999—showing my father, Andrew Rowan, standing outside a high-security research facility in Geneva, Switzerland. Standing right beside him was a tall, imposing man in a dark suit whose face had been deliberately cut out of the print.

And third, a fresh piece of cream-colored parchment containing a single handwritten line of text:

The eight million in Northstar was only the decoy, Birdie. The real vault requires the key.

Your father never died in Blackwood Pines.

Find Vault 714 before they realize you have it.

I stared at the photograph, my breath catching in my throat, my heart hammering violently against my ribs as the cold golden key caught the ambient light of the kitchen lamp.

I looked up at Samuel, whose face had gone completely white once again.

“Samuel...” I whispered, my voice trembling with a terrifying mix of dread and sudden realization. “Whose handwriting is this?”

Samuel stared at the note, his jaw dropping in absolute horror.

“That isn't Caleb’s handwriting, Natalie,” Samuel rasped, his voice barely audible.

“Then whose is it?!” I demanded, gripping the edge of the marble island.

Samuel looked up at me, his eyes wide with pure, unadulterated shock.

“It’s your father’s.”
