Chapter 16 - The Forged Signature

The legal avalanche that followed was swift, devastating, and absolute.
Within forty-eight hours of the discovery in Blackwood Pines, federal agents executed a search warrant on Grant Holloway’s residence, office, and private cloud servers.
What they uncovered transformed a domestic violence case into one of the largest corporate conspiracy indictments in recent state history.
Officer Torres and a federal prosecutor met with Samuel and me at the lake house to present their findings.
“Grant was bleeding money, Mrs. Holloway,” the prosecutor explained, spreading dozens of printed documents across the dining table. “His private cryptocurrency investments collapsed last year, leaving him over two million dollars in debt to offshore lenders.”
He pointed to a set of insurance forms—the very papers Grant had pressured me to sign weeks before Christmas.
“These were not standard policy updates,” the prosecutor revealed. “Grant had taken out a three-million-dollar supplemental casualty policy on your life. And embedded within section four was a durable power of attorney clause.”
I leaned closer, staring at the line where my name was signed in blue ink.
“That’s... that’s not my handwriting,” I whispered, recognizing the shaky, imitation strokes. “He forged my signature.”
“He forged it,” Officer Torres confirmed grimly. “And he had already scheduled a private consultation with a psychiatrist affiliated with his firm—a doctor willing to sign off on declaring you ‘emotionally incapacitated due to severe postpartum depression’ immediately after the birth of your child.”
Tears of pure horror filled my eyes.
If Grant had succeeded on Christmas Day—if he had pushed me harder, if I had lost the baby, or if I had been rendered unconscious—he would have assumed total legal control of the eight-point-nine-million-dollar trust, wiped out his family’s debts, and silenced the Northstar investigation forever.

“He didn't just want the money,” I rasped, my voice trembling with profound rage. “He wanted to erase me.”
“He failed, Natalie,” Samuel said, placing a firm, loving hand on my shoulder. “He is facing federal wire fraud, forgery, grand larceny, and felony assault charges. He will never touch you or your daughter again.”
