Chapter 35 - The Open Door

Years later.

The mansion in the hills was full of noise again.

But this time, it was the sound of small footsteps running down the grand staircase.

Valentina’s five-year-old son, Mateo, named after a brave boy in one of her foundation shelters, was sprinting through the hallway holding a toy airplane.

Diego, now officially a grandfather, sat in his favorite armchair in the living room, reading a book.

He lowered his glasses as the little boy crashed into his legs, laughing wildly.

"Grandpa! Look how fast it flies!" Mateo cheered, holding up the plastic plane.

"It flies very fast, mi campeón," Diego smiled warmly, lifting the boy onto his lap. "But not as fast as you."

Marisol walked into the room, carrying a tray of fresh cookies.

She looked exactly as beautiful as the day Diego first saw her.

"Don't fill him up with sugar, Diego," Valentina warned playfully, walking in behind her mother. "He will never go to sleep tonight."

"Grandparents are legally required to spoil their grandchildren," Diego reasoned with a perfectly straight face. "It is a universal law."

Valentina rolled her eyes, but she was smiling brightly.

She sat on the sofa next to her mother, watching her father play with her son.

She looked around the grand living room.

She remembered the night she had hidden behind the kitchen door, terrified of the powerful billionaire who owned the house.

She remembered the coldness, the fear, and the silence.

Now, the house was warm.

The doors were wide open.

The sun streamed brightly through the massive windows.

Diego looked up, catching Valentina’s eye.

He understood exactly what she was thinking.

They had walked through hell to get to this exact moment.

But they had made it.

Diego smiled, kissing his grandson's forehead, then looked deeply at his wife and daughter.

Because sometimes…

The greatest empire a man can build…

Is not made of money.

May you like

It is built with love.

And love, unlike money, lasts forever.
