Chapter 19 - The Speech and the Stranger

Valentina stepped up to the crystal podium on the main stage.
The spotlight illuminated her face.
She looked out at the massive crowd of powerful people.
Ten years ago, she would have been terrified to stand in front of strangers.
But tonight, she stood tall.
"Good evening," Valentina began, her voice echoing clearly through the speakers.
"Ten years ago, I did not have a voice. I was a child hiding in the shadows, believing that my presence was a burden. I believed that love was something you had to earn through perfection, and that family was an illusion."
The entire ballroom was completely silent.
Every eye was fixed on her.
"But someone taught me that true power does not come from intimidating people," Valentina continued, looking directly at Diego in the front row. "True power comes from lifting people up when they are entirely broken."
Diego felt a tear prick the corner of his eye.
He reached over and grabbed Marisol’s hand tightly.
"This foundation exists because no child should ever feel invisible," Valentina said. "No child should ever feel like they are a mistake. Thank you for helping us open the doors for them."
The crowd erupted into a deafening standing ovation.
Valentina smiled, stepping down from the stage.
As she walked through the crowd, guests patted her on the back and congratulated her.
Suddenly, a hand gently grabbed her elbow.
Valentina turned.
It was the young man in the sharp suit. Julian.
"That was a beautiful speech, Valentina," Julian said, offering a charming smile.
"Thank you," Valentina replied politely. "Do I know you?"
"My name is Julian. I am a new donor. Your father and I were just speaking."
Valentina’s posture relaxed slightly.
"Well, we appreciate your support, Julian."
"Actually, I wanted to talk to you about a specific project," Julian said, stepping closer. "My employer is very interested in funding a new orphanage in the southern district. We want you to personally oversee the design."
"I would have to clear that with our board of directors," Valentina said professionally.
"Of course," Julian nodded.
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, silver business card.
He handed it to her.
"Call me tomorrow," Julian said. "We can discuss the details over coffee. Just you and me."
Valentina looked at the card.
It was completely blank, except for a phone number.
"I'll think about it," Valentina said.
As Julian walked away, Diego appeared at her side.
His eyes were dark and serious.
"What did he want?" Diego demanded.
"Just a donation project," Valentina said, holding up the card.
Diego snatched the card from her hand.
"Dad, what is wrong?" Valentina asked, confused.
"Marcus just ran the Vanguard Investment Group," Diego whispered, his jaw clenched tight. "It’s a shell corporation. The primary shareholder is registered under a fake name, but the offshore routing numbers match the exact accounts Paulina used ten years ago."

Valentina’s blood turned to ice.
The enemy was inside the room.
