Chapter 28 - The Fall of the Queen

Paulina sprinted desperately through the muddy, rain-soaked alleys behind the factory.

She could hear the heavy boots of the federal agents closing in behind her, their flashlights cutting through the darkness.

Her expensive high heels broke in the mud, forcing her to run barefoot over the sharp gravel.

She had lost everything. Again.

She rounded a corner, hoping to find her hidden getaway car, but she stopped dead in her tracks.

Standing perfectly still in the middle of the narrow alley, blocking her only escape route, was Valentina.

The sixteen-year-old girl held a heavy flashlight, staring at the woman who had terrorized her childhood.

"Get out of my way, you little brat!" Paulina screamed, lunging forward with her fingernails bared like claws.

Valentina did not flinch.

She did not step back.

She simply pressed a button on a high-voltage taser she had taken from Marcus's armory.

The electrical current struck Paulina directly in the chest.

The arrogant, cruel woman collapsed instantly onto the muddy pavement, convulsing helplessly before going completely still.

Valentina stood over her, looking down with absolute disgust.

"You are nothing but a ghost, Paulina," Valentina said coldly. "And ghosts don't scare me anymore."

Moments later, Diego and the federal agents rushed into the alley.

They found Valentina standing calmly beside the unconscious body of Paulina Vargas.

Diego ran to his daughter, pulling her into a massive, crushing hug.

"Are you hurt?" Diego asked frantically, checking her face.

"I'm fine, Dad," Valentina smiled, hugging him back. "I told you, I'm not a little kid anymore."

Diego looked down at Paulina, as the federal agents slapped heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists and dragged her out of the mud.

"You did perfectly, princesa," Diego whispered, incredibly proud of the strong young woman she had become.

Meanwhile, back inside the factory, the paramedics were loading a heavily bleeding Julian onto a stretcher.

Marisol stood nearby, watching the young man who had manipulated her daughter.

"Why did you do it?" Marisol asked quietly as they rolled him past her.

Julian coughed, looking up at the ceiling.

"She was my only family," Julian whispered painfully. "I just wanted to make her proud."

Marisol looked at him with profound sadness.

"Family doesn't ask you to destroy other people," Marisol said. "Family asks you to protect them."

Julian closed his eyes as the ambulance doors shut.

The nightmare was finally over.

Paulina was going to federal prison for the rest of her natural life, facing charges of terrorism, kidnapping, and extortion.

The Villaseñor empire remained entirely intact.
