Chapter 18 - The Fall of Spencer Vance

Two months later, I returned to Phoenix briefly to testify at the preliminary grand jury hearing.
The courtroom was packed with news reporters and public observers. The case of the “Stepmother Poisoner” had captivated national headlines.
Spencer Vance stood at the defense table in a navy blue prison jumpsuit. As the prosecutor read the long list of formal indictments against him, Spencer looked over his shoulder and caught my eye.
During a brief recess, as the guards were preparing to lead him back to the holding cell, Spencer leaned toward the gallery where I was sitting.
“You think you won, Gregory?” Spencer sneered under his breath, a desperate, bitter smirk on his face. “You think Pamela and I were the only ones involved in this?”
I stood up, staring at him coolly. “What are you talking about, Spencer?”
“Check the original land trust documents for the La Jolla house,” Spencer whispered, his voice rising as the guards grabbed his arms. “Check who signed as the secondary witness four years ago! Pamela didn't work alone!”
The guards yanked Spencer through the side door before he could say another word, his dark laughter echoing down the courthouse corridor.
