Chapter 13 - The CPS Ambush

|
On Thursday afternoon—twenty-four hours before our scheduled departure for California—Pamela made a desperate, unscripted move.
I was sitting in the living room working on my laptop while Pamela was upstairs in her office.
Suddenly, the front doorbell rang loudly.
I opened the door to find two uniformed Phoenix police officers standing on the porch alongside a woman holding a leather notepad and a badge identifying her as an investigator from Child Protective Services.
“Mr. Gregory Mercer?” the CPS officer asked briskly.
“Yes?”
“I am Investigator Davis,” she said, her face severe. “We received an urgent, high-priority report regarding the immediate welfare of your daughter, Matilda Mercer. The report includes video evidence alleging severe emotional instability and potential parental neglect in this household.”
Behind me, I heard soft footsteps descending the stairs. Pamela appeared, holding a handkerchief, looking startled and distressed.
“Oh my goodness!” Pamela gasped, placing a hand over her heart. “Officers, what is going on?”
“Mrs. Mercer?” Investigator Davis turned to her. “An anonymous party submitted three video files to our emergency portal two hours ago, showing a child in severe psychiatric distress while an adult male voice appeared to dismiss her behavior.”
Pamela looked at me with an expression of heartbroken regret—a magnificent act played for the officers.
“Oh, Gregory...” Pamela whimpered, her eyes brimming with tears. “Did you... did someone report us? I told you we needed to get her help sooner!”
I stood calmly on the porch, looking at the CPS worker, and then slowly turned my gaze to Pamela.
“You filed the report, Pamela,” I said softly.
Pamela gasped, looking horrified. “Gregory! How could you accuse me of such a thing? I love Matilda!”
I looked back at Investigator Davis. “Investigator Davis, before you proceed, please call Detective Miller of the Phoenix Homicide Division. Case File 88-B.”
The CPS officer frowned, surprised by my composure. She pulled out her phone, dialed the department, and spoke quietly for two minutes. As she listened to the person on the other end of the line, her expression shifted from stern suspicion to utter shock.

She lowered her phone, staring at Pamela with cold disgust.
“Mrs. Mercer,” Investigator Davis said sharply. “You are ordered not to leave this property.”
