Chapter 11 - The Fake Emergency

“Gregory, listen to me very carefully,” Lincoln’s urgent voice commanded through the earpiece. “Put everything back in the safe right now. Lock it. Step out of the room. Do not confront her!”
It took every ounce of my willpower not to walk into the master bedroom and strangle Pamela with my bare hands. But Lincoln was right. A personal assault would land me in prison and leave Matilda completely defenseless.
I took five deep breaths, photographed the rest of the documents, placed everything back inside the safe, and closed the door.
I crept back to the master bedroom, slid into bed beside the monster who had murdered the mother of my child, and stared at the ceiling until the sun rose over the Phoenix horizon.
At 8:00 AM, Pamela woke up, stretching comfortably in her silk pajamas.
“Good morning, darling,” she said sweetly, reaching out to touch my shoulder.
I sat up, pulling away under the guise of pouring a glass of water from the nightstand. “Morning.”
Her eyes narrowed slightly, picking up on my tense posture. “Are you okay? You look like you didn't sleep at all.”
“I was thinking about what you said last night,” I said, turning to look at her. “About Dr. Aris in San Diego.”
Pamela’s face lit up instantly with false concern. “Oh? And what did you decide?”
“I think you’re right,” I said, forcing my voice to sound defeated and tired. “I can't handle Matilda’s episodes anymore. I called Henrietta earlier, and she agreed to let us take Matilda to California this weekend for a full evaluation.”
Pamela could barely contain her excitement. Her hands fluttered in her lap. “That’s... that’s wonderful news, Gregory! A fresh evaluation from a top specialist will give us all peace of mind.”
“I’ll set up the meeting with Dr. Aris for Saturday morning,” I said. “Why don't we drive down to La Jolla on Friday? We can stay at the beach house.”

Pamela’s eyes gleamed with cold greed. “That sounds perfect, darling. Absolutely perfect.”
She had no idea that she was walking directly into a trap designed to destroy her.
