Chapter 14 - Cornered Animals

Pamela’s face drained of all color.
“What... what are you talking about?” she stammered, stepping backward toward the hallway. “There’s been a mistake!”
“There is no mistake, Pamela,” I said, stepping into the foyer and closing the door behind the officers. “Detective Miller broke your compounding pharmacist in Mesa two hours ago. Arthur Pendelton confessed to supplying you and Spencer Vance with the liquid stimulant used to poison my daughter.”
Pamela’s purse slipped from her shoulder, crashing onto the hardwood floor.
“You... you know?” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
“I know everything,” I said, my voice echoing through the high-ceilinged room. “I know about the drops. I know about Spencer. I know about the La Jolla house.”
I took a step closer to her, my eyes burning into hers.
“And I know what you did to Beatrice.”
At the mention of Beatrice’s name, Pamela let out a sharp, guttural gasp. The suave, refined woman vanished completely, replaced by a terrified, cornered animal.
She turned and made a desperate dash toward the back patio doors, attempting to flee through the garden.
The two police officers reacted instantly. They tackled her near the glass sliding doors, pulling her arms behind her back as steel handcuffs clicked tightly around her wrists.
“Gregory! Please!” Pamela screamed, thrashing against the officers as she was dragged toward the front door. “It was Spencer’s idea! He forced me to do it! He needed the money!”

“Save it for the judge, Pamela,” I said coldly as the officers led her down the driveway and shoved her into the back of a patrol car.
Across town at the exact same moment, federal marshals breached the law office of Spencer Vance in downtown Phoenix.
