Three weeks later.
The legal storm had begun to settle. Pamela Mercer and Spencer Vance were both held without bail, facing multiple counts of first-degree murder, attempted murder of a minor, child endangerment, and grand fraud. The prosecutor assured me they would spend the rest of their natural lives behind bars without the possibility of parole.

I packed our belongings into a moving truck, and together with Henrietta and Matilda, we drove west toward California.
As the sun began to set over the Pacific Ocean, we pulled up the long, winding driveway of the La Jolla beach house—the magnificent white stone estate overlooking the crashing blue waves below.
Matilda ran out of the car, her laughter echoing against the ocean breeze as she ran across the grassy lawn toward the balcony.
“Daddy! Look!” she shouted, pointing at the sparkling water. “Mommy’s ocean!”
I walked up beside her, placing a hand on her small shoulder, feeling her body calm and steady. Her hands were no longer shaking. The toxins were completely gone from her system, and the light had returned to her beautiful eyes.

Henrietta walked up beside us, wrapping an arm around my waist. “You saved her, Gregory. Beatrice would be so proud of you.”
“We saved each other,” I said softly, looking out over the endless horizon.
