Chapter 7

|

The morning sun streamed brightly through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of the Vance estate, bathing the grand marble foyer in a warm, golden light. For the first time in five years, the mansion was completely silent. There were no booming shouts, no breaking glass, and no terrifying, unpredictable outbursts of rage from a drunken patriarch.

Karen walked down the grand mahogany staircase wearing comfortable sweatpants and a soft cardigan, holding a steaming mug of black coffee. She felt an overwhelming, profound sense of absolute peace that she hadn't experienced since before she met Julian.

She walked into the expansive chef's kitchen, where Lily was sitting at the granite island, happily coloring in a large book.

"Good morning, my sweet girl," Karen smiled, kissing the top of Lily's head.

"Good morning, Mommy," Lily beamed, looking up from her crayons. "Is the bad man really gone forever?"

The innocence and genuine relief in her daughter’s voice made Karen's heart ache, but it also solidified her absolute resolve. She had done the right thing. She had burned Julian’s empire to the ground to ensure her daughter would never have to live in terror again.

"Yes, baby," Karen said, her voice filled with unwavering certainty. "He is never, ever coming back to this house. This is our home now. Just you and me."

The front doorbell chimed, a soft, pleasant sound. Karen walked to the security monitor and recognized the sharp, tailored suit of Arthur Pendelton, the head of the Vance firm's board of directors and one of her late father’s oldest, most trusted colleagues.

She opened the heavy oak doors, offering a warm smile.

"Good morning, Arthur," Karen greeted him. "Please, come in."

"Good morning, Karen," Arthur smiled, stepping into the foyer and taking off his hat. "I apologize for the early intrusion, but the board held an emergency session at dawn. We have fully processed the transfer of your thirty percent voting shares. The federal receivership has also temporarily granted us proxy over Julian's seized forty percent."

"So the board has a supermajority," Karen noted, leading him into the formal living room.

"We do," Arthur nodded, taking a seat on the white silk sofa. "And our first unanimous action was to officially terminate Julian Vance from his position as CEO, stripping him of all corporate privileges, severance packages, and access to company properties."

"It's about time," Karen said, taking a sip of her coffee.

"Our second unanimous action," Arthur continued, his eyes shining with deep respect, "was to ask you to step in as the interim CEO, effective immediately. Your father built this firm, Karen. You have his brilliant mind for business. We need you to guide us through this public relations nightmare and rebuild our ethical standing."
