Chapter 18

The ultimate, devastating blow to Julian’s defense came on the final day of testimony, when the prosecution called Karen Vance to the stand.
She walked into the courtroom looking like absolute royalty. She wore a sharp, immaculate white business suit, her posture flawless, radiating the profound, unshakeable strength of a woman who had walked through hell and emerged completely sovereign.
Julian couldn't even look at her. He kept his eyes glued to the scuffed wooden table in front of him, feeling entirely insignificant in her presence.
Sterling approached the podium, his tone softening significantly to address the woman who had single-handedly saved the Vance firm from complete ruin.
"Mrs. Vance, when did you first suspect that your husband was actively embezzling funds from the company your father built?" Sterling asked gently.
"I didn't suspect the embezzlement immediately," Karen answered, her voice ringing clear and authoritative, filling the massive courtroom. "I suspected his absolute lack of morality long before I saw the financial ledgers. He was a tyrant in our home. He terrorized our employees, manipulated the board, and treated our daughter like a complete inconvenience."
"And when you discovered the missing trust funds?" Sterling prompted.
"I felt a profound, overwhelming sense of clarity," Karen testified, looking directly at the jury. "He didn't just steal money. He attempted to steal my daughter's future to fund a life of pathetic, secretive debauchery. He believed that because he held the title of CEO, the laws of basic human decency simply did not apply to him."
"Did you confront him?"
"I did better than confront him," Karen stated, her eyes flashing with a fierce, brilliant intelligence. "I surrendered my inherited voting shares to the board to permanently remove his power. I secured my daughter's estate, and I handed the evidence directly to the authorities. I did exactly what a mother and a CEO is supposed to do. I protected my family, and I protected my company from a toxic parasite."
The courtroom was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Karen didn't sound angry or vindictive; she sounded completely rational, deeply protective, and entirely justified.

Julian’s public defender didn't even attempt a cross-examination. He knew that attacking Karen on the stand would only further enrage the jury.
As Karen stepped down from the witness stand and walked back down the center aisle, she didn't even glance in Julian’s direction. He was officially a ghost to her, entirely erased from the narrative of her thriving life.
