Chapter 16

The first day of the federal trial was a media circus of unprecedented proportions. News vans lined the streets outside the courthouse, and the gallery was absolutely packed to capacity. Julian sat at the defense table in a borrowed, ill-fitting grey suit, attempting to project confidence, but his pale, drawn face and shaking hands betrayed his utter terror.
District Attorney Thomas Sterling stood at the prosecutor's podium, looking sharp, commanding, and entirely prepared to absolutely destroy Julian’s life.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury," Sterling began his opening statement, his voice resonating with deep, undeniable authority. "This case is not simply about corporate greed. It is about a profound, horrifying betrayal of trust. The defendant, Julian Vance, was born into immense privilege. He was handed a thriving, highly respected corporate empire built by his father-in-law."
Sterling paced slowly in front of the jury box, making direct eye contact with every single juror.
"But privilege was not enough for Mr. Vance," Sterling continued, his tone dropping into a register of cold disgust. "He wanted absolute, unchecked power. When his gambling debts and lavish lifestyle drained his personal accounts, he didn't adjust his spending. He simply began stealing from his own company. And when that wasn't enough, he crossed a line so despicable, it defies human comprehension."
Sterling pointed a rigid finger directly at Julian.
"He stole the trust funds belonging to his six-year-old daughter to buy expensive jewelry for his mistress," Sterling boomed, the accusation echoing loudly through the silent courtroom.
A collective gasp swept through the gallery. Several jurors physically recoiled, looking at Julian with blatant, undeniable revulsion. Julian shrank down in his chair, feeling the crushing weight of public hatred bearing down on his chest.

"Over the next three weeks, the prosecution will present a mountain of irrefutable banking evidence," Sterling concluded, walking back to his table. "You will hear from the people he manipulated, the employees he terrorized, and the family he utterly destroyed. And at the conclusion of this trial, we will ask you to hold this man accountable for the devastation he has caused. Thank you."
Julian looked at his public defender, sheer panic finally replacing his arrogant delusion. Sterling hadn't just opened a legal argument; he had just completely assassinated Julian’s character before a single piece of evidence was even introduced.
