Chapter 20

|

The sentencing hearing was a brief, brutal, and entirely merciless affair. Julian stood before Judge Harrison in his bright orange jumpsuit, trembling uncontrollably, completely stripped of his corporate armor and wealth. There were no character witnesses willing to speak on his behalf; his friends had abandoned him, his mistresses had betrayed him, and his family had destroyed him.

"Mr. Vance," Judge Harrison began, his voice dripping with profound judicial contempt. "I have presided over federal fraud cases for three decades. I have seen desperate people make terrible mistakes. But you were not desperate. You were incredibly wealthy, immensely privileged, and entirely consumed by an insatiable, arrogant greed."

Julian kept his head bowed, tears silently streaming down his pale, drawn face.

"You systematically defrauded the employees who relied on your company for their livelihoods," Judge Harrison continued, his tone echoing loudly in the silent courtroom. "You manipulated the financial markets, and you brutally betrayed the sacred trust of your own six-year-old child to fund a pathetic, debauched lifestyle. You are the absolute worst iteration of corporate corruption."

The judge picked up his pen, signing the heavy stack of federal sentencing guidelines in front of him.

"The federal guidelines demand a severe penalty to act as a deterrent for this level of egregious financial manipulation," Judge Harrison declared loudly. "Julian Vance, I sentence you to forty-five years in federal prison, without the possibility of early parole. Furthermore, I am ordering complete financial restitution to the Vance firm and the Lily Vance trust, completely liquidating any hidden assets you may still possess."

Julian let out a loud, agonizing wail of pure despair. Forty-five years. It was effectively a life sentence. He would die in a concrete box, completely forgotten by the world he once ruled.

"Take him away," Judge Harrison ordered, slamming his heavy wooden gavel down for the final time.

As the federal marshals dragged Julian backward down the center aisle, he looked frantically toward the gallery, desperately searching for Karen. But she wasn't there. She hadn't even bothered to attend his sentencing. She was entirely busy running a massive corporation and raising her beautiful daughter, leaving Julian to fade completely into the miserable, irrelevant darkness of his own making.
