Chapter 8 - The Loyal Shadows

|
Executing the trap required absolute, flawless precision. Julian had replaced the estate’s outer perimeter guards with mercenaries loyal only to him, but the inner sanctum of the house—the staff, the chefs, and the subterranean security—remained fiercely loyal to the man who had treated them with respect for fifteen years.
Grace slipped into the master study while Julian was busy berating a terrified accountant in the dining room. She secured the embossed stationary, expertly mimicking Vanessa’s looping, arrogant handwriting using an old shopping list she had found in the trash weeks ago.
Julian, she wrote. I couldn't stay. I panicked. I am at the hunting cabin by the lake. It is freezing and I am terrified. Come get me tonight, alone, before I lose my mind and call the police.
She sealed it in a blank envelope and slipped it onto his desk, hiding it just enough to make it look like it had been slipped under the door by a discreet courier.
That evening, the trap was sprung.
Grace watched from the shadows of the grand staircase as Julian discovered the note. His eyes widened in panic. He immediately grabbed his heavy winter coat and a set of car keys, rushing out the front doors without informing his newly hired mercenary guards where he was going.
The moment his taillights disappeared down the long, winding driveway, the estate underwent a terrifying transformation.
Daniel emerged from the subterranean basement, no longer playing the role of a paralyzed victim. He wore a black tactical vest over his dark sweater, armed with a suppressed submachine gun and twin pistols.
Elias mobilized the hidden loyalists—twenty seasoned, brutal enforcers who had been quietly hiding in the basement barracks for three days, waiting for their king to rise from the dead.
“Secure the perimeter,” Daniel ordered his men, his voice echoing coldly through the grand foyer. “Execute the mercenaries Julian brought into my home. No survivors. I want my house clean by midnight.”
The takeover was silent, bloody, and horrifyingly efficient. The mercenaries, expecting an easy paycheck guarding a dead man's empty house, were entirely unprepared for the elite Whitfield hit squad materializing from the shadows.
Grace remained safely locked inside the security hub, monitoring the cameras as Daniel systematically reclaimed his empire room by room. She watched the man she had served for two years move like a god of war, a terrifying force of nature demanding absolute retribution.

Within an hour, the estate was secure. The usurper’s men were dead.
Now, they just had to wait for the usurper to return.
