Chapter 19 - The New Order

The anniversary of the night Daniel fell down the stairs arrived with a bitter, freezing rain that washed the streets of Charlotte clean.
The estate was heavily fortified, a routine precaution on significant dates. Grace sat in her luxurious office, reviewing the quarterly financial ledgers. The numbers were staggering; the syndicate had never been more profitable or secure.
Elias knocked sharply on the heavy oak door, stepping inside with a grim expression on his scarred face.
“What is it, Elias?” Grace asked, not looking up from her paperwork.
“We have a situation at the southern ports, Ma'am,” Elias reported, his voice tight. “A massive shipment of illegal narcotics was just intercepted by federal agents. Three of our key warehouse managers were arrested.”
Grace frowned, setting her pen down. The Whitfield syndicate did not deal in narcotics. Daniel had strictly forbidden it, preferring the high-yield, lower-risk avenues of political corruption, illegal gambling, and weapons logistics.
“Someone is moving product through our territory using our routing numbers,” Grace deduced instantly, her sharp mind connecting the dots. “They wanted the feds to hit our warehouses to distract us.”
“It gets worse,” Elias added, stepping closer to the desk. “The feds didn't just find drugs. They found heavily falsified documents implicating Daniel directly in the smuggling ring. Someone is trying to build a federal RICO case against the boss.”
Grace stood up, her blood running cold. This wasn't a crude assassination attempt by a jealous brother. This was a sophisticated, highly orchestrated attack designed to dismantle the entire empire legally and permanently.
“Where is Daniel?” Grace demanded, grabbing her sidearm from the desk drawer and sliding it into her shoulder holster.
“He’s at the downtown high-rise meeting with the city council,” Elias answered.
“Get the tactical teams moving. We need to extract him immediately before the feds raid the building,” Grace ordered, moving swiftly toward the door.
She pulled her encrypted phone from her pocket, dialing Daniel’s direct line. It rang three times before connecting.

“Daniel, you need to leave the building right now,” Grace said urgently. “We’ve been framed at the southern ports. The feds are coming for you.”
“I know,” Daniel’s voice came through the speaker, dangerously calm and unnervingly quiet. “They are already here, Grace. The building is surrounded.”
