Chapter 7 - The Poisoned Alliance

The recording devices captured more than just illegal weapons deals. They captured the absolute rot at the core of Julian’s ambition.
On Wednesday night, the hidden microphone beneath the desk picked up a late-night phone call. Julian had poured himself a glass of Daniel’s most expensive scotch, celebrating a newly signed contract, when he dialed a secure, encrypted number.
In the basement security hub, Daniel, Elias, and Grace listened in dead silence as the audio fed through the speakers.
“Is it done?” Julian asked the person on the other end of the line.
“The account transfers have been initiated,” a smooth, accented voice replied. It was Alexei, the brutal head of the Russian cartel operating out of New York. “But we have a problem, Julian. The Commission has called for a mandatory summit next week to officially recognize your succession. They expect Vanessa Cole to be by your side to solidify the Croft family alliance.”
“Vanessa is missing,” Julian hissed, pacing the floor above them. “She panicked after the stairs. I have men looking for her.”
“Find her,” Alexei ordered coldly. “Without the Croft alliance, the Commission will view you as weak, and our weapons deal is void. If she becomes a liability, silence her.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened so fiercely that the muscles fluttered visibly beneath his skin. Julian wasn't just working with the Russians; he had effectively sold the entire Whitfield syndicate to them in exchange for backing his coup.
“He’s selling our territory,” Elias growled, his hand resting instinctively on his holstered weapon. “The Russians will swallow us whole within a month.”
“He needs Vanessa to legitimize his claim to the throne,” Daniel deduced smoothly, his tactical mind running a dozen scenarios simultaneously. He turned to Grace, his eyes dark and calculating. “Julian thinks she ran away. He doesn't know she is locked in a soundproof cell exactly thirty feet away from where we are standing.”
“What do you want me to do, Boss?” Grace asked, fully stepping into her role as his most trusted operative.
“I need you to forge a letter,” Daniel commanded. “Use the heavy, embossed stationary from my desk. Write it in Vanessa’s hand. Tell Julian she is hiding in the old hunting cabin upstate, terrified of the police, and demands he come get her personally.”

Grace nodded, already visualizing the stationary. “And when he gets there?”
“He will find a ghost,” Daniel smiled, a terrifying, predatory expression that made the room feel twenty degrees colder. “And we will take back my house.”
