Chapter 1 - The Face on the Screen

|

The glowing screen of the smartphone illuminated the dark, polished marble of the grand foyer. Daniel Whitfield stared at the frozen frame of the security footage, his blood running entirely cold. The man holding the small glass bottle, carefully pouring the clear, slippery liquid across the top edge of the staircase, was not a rival cartel boss. It was not an underpaid, disgruntled guard.

It was Julian.

His younger brother. The blood of his blood. The man Daniel had painstakingly protected from the sheer brutality of their father’s criminal legacy, paying for his Ivy League education while keeping his own hands stained with the sins of the Charlotte syndicate.

“Julian,” Daniel whispered, the name tasting like ash and iron in his mouth.

Beside him, Elias, his massive head of security, kept his expression carved from absolute stone. “He bypassed the primary cameras, Boss. He didn't know I had installed a secondary pinhole lens in the chandelier after the perimeter breach last month.”

Vanessa’s face instantly turned the color of old, dry parchment. She took a stumbling step backward, her perfectly manicured hands trembling violently as they clutched the expensive silk of her robe.

“Daniel, I swear,” Vanessa gasped, her voice shrill and leaking pure panic. “I didn't know he was going to do it today! I told him we had to wait until after the wedding!”

The silence that followed her desperate words was louder than a gunshot in the cavernous hallway.

She had just confessed. She hadn't denied the assassination plot; she had only denied the specific timeline. She was actively conspiring with his own brother to murder him and steal his empire.

Grace, who was still kneeling faithfully beside Daniel holding the blood-soaked towel, slowly looked up at the woman who had tormented her for two long years. The maid’s dark eyes were wide, but she didn't shrink away from the danger.

Daniel slowly got to his feet. The deep gash on his forehead throbbed, a steady drumbeat of sharp pain that perfectly matched the furious, apocalyptic rhythm of his heart. He didn't scream. He didn't strike his fiancée. Uncontrolled violence was a tool for amateurs, and Daniel Whitfield never used his tools without a flawless blueprint.

“Elias,” Daniel said, his voice dropping into a lethal, freezing register that made the seasoned security chief stand straighter.

“Yes, Boss.”

“Take my loving fiancée to the soundproof room in the subterranean basement. Take her phone. Take her shoes. If she speaks a single word to anyone on the staff, cut out her tongue.”

Vanessa screamed a horrific, piercing sound as Elias grabbed her arm, but the heavy oak doors of the basement quickly swallowed the noise, leaving Daniel alone with his maid and his shattered trust.
