Chapter 18 - The Elevation

“What do you want me to call you?” Grace whispered, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs.
Daniel didn't answer with words. He closed the distance between them, his hand sliding smoothly from her knuckles to the nape of her neck. He pulled her flush against his chest, his mouth crashing down onto hers in a fierce, desperate, consuming kiss.
Grace didn't hesitate. She threw her arms around his neck, kissing him back with all the suppressed longing and violent adrenaline of the past month. The power dynamic in the room shattered completely, replaced by a profound, undeniable partnership.
“You call me Daniel,” he murmured against her lips, his hands mapping the curves of her waist. “And you stay by my side. Not behind me. Beside me.”
“Always,” Grace promised, pulling him back down for another kiss.
The formal elevation of their relationship sent a final, terrifying message to the remaining syndicate bosses. The King of Charlotte hadn't just survived an assassination attempt; he had found a Queen who was twice as ruthless and completely untouchable.
They ruled the city with an iron fist. The profits soared, the legitimate businesses expanded, and the streets remained terrifyingly quiet under their absolute control.
Six months passed in a blur of luxury, power, and dark romance.
Grace wore custom-tailored suits by day and dripping diamonds by night. She sat at the head of the long mahogany table during high-stakes negotiations, her sharp mind dismantling rival cartels before they even realized they had been outplayed.
One evening, Daniel and Grace were hosting a private, exclusive dinner for the city’s top politicians, solidifying their grip on the local government.
Grace stood near the massive fireplace, holding a glass of expensive champagne, looking like a goddess of war in a deep crimson gown.
“You look bored, my love,” Daniel smiled, stepping up beside her and kissing her temple.
“Politicians are so incredibly predictable,” Grace sighed, taking a sip of her champagne. “They all want the same bribes, wrapped in different ethical excuses. It lacks the thrill of a real fight.”
“Be careful what you wish for,” Daniel chuckled darkly, wrapping his arm around her waist. “Peace makes men soft. I prefer you sharp.”
“I will never be soft, Daniel,” Grace vowed, resting her head on his shoulder.

They were invincible. They had conquered the betrayal, eliminated the traitors, and secured their throne.
But in the world of the mafia, true peace is only an illusion, a brief intermission before the next bloodbath.
