Chapter 17 - The Queen of Ashes

The transition from maid to mafia Underboss was swift and shockingly bloody.
As Daniel predicted, the rival families viewed the internal coup as a sign of vulnerability. The Russian cartel, enraged by the execution of Alexei, launched a coordinated series of violent attacks on the Whitfield shipping ports, attempting to choke off their primary source of revenue.
They expected Daniel to retreat, to hide behind the walls of his fortified estate.
They fundamentally misunderstood the woman who now orchestrated his tactical defense.
Grace didn't wait for the Russians to strike again. She utilized her intimate knowledge of the city’s service workers—the maids, the drivers, the caterers who were completely invisible to the wealthy elite. She activated a massive, hidden intelligence network that spanned every luxury hotel and high-end restaurant in the city.
Within forty-eight hours, Grace knew exactly where the new Russian lieutenants were hiding.
“They are operating out of a penthouse suite at the Grand Continental,” Grace reported to Daniel, rolling a massive architectural blueprint across his desk. “Heavy security at the elevators. Impenetrable from the ground floor.”
“So we don't go through the ground floor,” Daniel smiled, leaning over the blueprints.
That night, a team of elite Whitfield enforcers, dressed impeccably as high-end catering staff, breached the Russian penthouse through the service elevators.
The strike was absolute and devastating.
The Russian lieutenants were eliminated before they could even draw their weapons. The message was broadcast loudly to the entire underworld: the Whitfield syndicate was not bleeding; they were hunting.
The other families immediately backed down, terrified by the sheer, surgical precision of the retaliation.
Grace walked through the estate corridors the next morning, feeling the weight of the power she now wielded. The guards bowed their heads respectfully as she passed. The household staff, her former peers, looked at her with a mixture of awe and absolute terror.
She had burned her old life to the ground and emerged as the undisputed Queen of Ashes.
She entered Daniel’s study without knocking.
Daniel was standing by the window, looking out over the manicured gardens. He turned when she entered, his gray eyes softening slightly.
“The city is quiet,” Daniel noted, turning back to the view.
“Fear is a very effective pacifier, Boss,” Grace replied, standing beside him.

“I don't want you calling me Boss anymore, Grace,” Daniel said softly, reaching out and gently taking her hand. His calloused fingers traced her knuckles. “You are my equal in this empire. Without you, I would be dead on that staircase.”
Grace’s breath hitched slightly, the dark, dangerous chemistry that had been simmering between them finally boiling over.
