Chapter 8 - The Trust Revealed

I unclasped the leather folder. Inside were hundreds of pages of meticulously organized documents: copies of wire transfers, dealership purchase agreements, home security footage logs, and transcripts of over twelve months of text messages and emails Derek fundamentally believed I had deleted.
"We have everything we need to bury him," Naomi said, pulling up a chair.
Derek had not begun hating me simply because he thought I was "bad luck." His sudden shift from a mildly controlling husband to an actively abusive monster had a very specific, financial origin. He had begun hating me the exact day he learned the truth about my late grandmother’s trust fund.
The trust was designed to release a staggering eight million dollars to me immediately following the birth of my first child. However, my grandmother was a shrewd woman. She had included a titanium-clad stipulation: the assets had to remain entirely under my sole control, in accounts bearing only my name.
The room went completely still as Naomi tapped a specific printout.
Three months earlier, Derek had secretly contacted a high-end financial adviser behind my back. He wanted to draft documents to forcibly move the trust into a joint investment company where he held 51% voting power. When the adviser told him that was legally impossible without my signature, Derek began his campaign.
He started creating a false narrative to everyone who would listen. He planted seeds that I was emotionally unstable, reckless with money, and severely depressed. He hinted that I might endanger the baby.
"He wasn't just venting to his mother," Naomi said, pointing to a log of his internet search history that Elias had extracted from our home router. "Look at this, Lena. He searched: How long must a spouse be missing before emergency control of assets can be requested by the husband?"

My stomach went ice cold. He hadn't just left me on the highway to punish me. He left me hoping I wouldn't make it home.
"He targeted the wrong woman," Elias said, stepping quietly out from the shadows near the hospital window.
