Chapter 35 - The Raid on Vivian

At 4:00 AM, the quiet, depressing hallway of Vivian Grant's apartment complex was shattered by the thunderous boom of a battering ram smashing through a cheap wooden door.
"Police! Search warrant! Get on the ground!"
Heavily armed tactical officers flooded into the cramped apartment. Vivian, wearing her faded silk robe, shrieked in terror as officers swarmed her living room. She was roughly forced onto her knees on the stained carpet, her hands zipped-tied behind her back.
"This is an outrage! Do you know who I am?!" Vivian shrieked, desperately clinging to the last pathetic shreds of her aristocratic delusions. "I am Vivian Grant! I sit on the board of the Symphony! You cannot treat me like a common criminal!"
A detective stepped through the broken doorway, holding up a plastic evidence bag containing the burner phone and the illegal surveillance photos of my house they had found pinned to her corkboard.
"You used to sit on the board, Mrs. Grant," the detective corrected her coldly. "Now, you're sitting in a jail cell. Your son gave you up. He sang like a bird. He told us everything about Vance Gable and the kidnapping plot."

Vivian’s face drained of all color. The realization that her own golden boy—the son she had coddled, enabled, and protected at the cost of destroying my life—had betrayed her so easily was the final, fatal blow to her psyche.
The officers hauled her to her feet, marching her out of the apartment in her robe and slippers. Neighbors peaked out of their doors, watching the disgraced matriarch being paraded down the hallway in plastic cuffs. There was no dignity left. The grand, manipulative orchestrator of my misery was reduced to a pathetic, weeping woman being shoved into the back of a police cruiser in the dead of night.
